I know this has nothing to do with Tribal Fest or Kajira, except for the fact that I took her with me.....

Has anyone seen the movie yet?

Kinda like watching the movie "Titanic" you know how it is going to end and it is sad....

It was neat seeing the "behind the scenes" stuff... as a DJ who likes gear, not enough equipment stuff,,, but really, for us, is there ever?

Nope this was all about MJ and his last performance which as anyone could tell, would have been outstanding.

The work that he put in and the set, show and special effects, all would have been great. But it's hard not to think that, or know that being who he was. He was Michale Jackson,,,,

A lot of the movie was nothing really special but my wife cried at a few of the sentimental parts and she isn't even a "fan"...

I think I only saw a Moonwalk for a brief shot during Billie Jean. This was right after I told my wife that he has some signature moves from some of his videos that he HAS to do.

I said that after watching them do "Beat It",,,,, the moves, or a lot of them were right out of the video...

The extra or new video that they were shooting for what I would guess was to play on the screens during the show, was really neat. Seeing how they did it and imagining what it was going to look like was cool. The "Thriller" part would be epic!

The special effects with the fireworks and flames,,,, nice touch, again, just makes me really wish I could have seen the show....

He said in an early part of the movie, that he was going to give the fans what they wanted. He knew what songs we would want to hear and what moves we wanted to see....

He had planned a Jackson 5 Medley and it was there that you could tell how much his voice had changed,,,, duh!! he's 50 not 12!

When he sang "I'll Be There" my wife was disappointed. Me, I just remember that song as the first slow song I ever danced with a girl to.... where is Brenda Stauber today? Hummmm LOL

For me the movie had a sad tone because, like I said, you knew how it was going to end....

Would I say run down and see it,,,, well the soundtrack kicks, it's nice to hear that bass and kick drum though the theaters sound system (makes me wanna buy more stuff), but it's not like it wouldn't be as cool seeing it at home..... I'm glad we went.

I give it 4 outa 5 stars....

* Level One TEACHER TRAINING and CERTIFICATION in the BlackSheep BellyDance Format for ATS (also available are Equivalency Certifications) with KAJIRA DJOUMAHNA.*

Dear Tribal Fest Attendees,
Over the years I’ve had requests to hold a Teacher Training at Tribal Fest, but my duties as Co-Producer prevent that. So, while flying from Mexico to Austria to Germany to England, all the places in which I taught my Teacher Training Program since last May 2009 Tribal Fest until today (Nov. 2009), I’ve had my Tribal Fest people on my mind. The solution I came up with is simply to offer this right before Tribal Fest starts! That’s the best I can do, but think about it: for once I’m offering this Training in a place you’re coming to anyway! I hope this “double whammy” of Tribal Fest 10 and becoming a Certified Teacher will entice anyone who’s been unable to catch me throughout the U.S. and abroad.

* WHY IS THIS OPPORTUNITY VALUABLE?

* You’ve a sincere desire to teach at least one Level One Class in the BSBD Format for ATS BD per week (which is the 1st step to becoming a member of BlackSheep BellyDance if that appeals to you)
* You have the need to understand ATS in order to perform kick-ass Tribal Fusion solos informed by this 3-day intensive study so you have actual ATS to draw from in while designing your future fusions
* You’re already teaching your own (or someone else’s) format and would like to add new ideas into your existing class curriculum
* To learn other musically correct ways to break down steps and cymbals for your students, right away from their very first class!
* You’re an Oriental Dancer (or other) who wishes to learn what’s different between American Tribal Style and other styles in order to continue your education
* You’ve been teaching for years and wish to add more to your “wisdom bag”, including possible new ways to think about or incorporate into your established style
* You’ve been studying ATS or another form of Tribal Belly Dance but have questions your instructor can’t answer.
* You’re a curious dancer who wishes to understand how Synchronized Group Improvisation works
* You’re a long-time teacher with your first (or more) touch of “Teacher Burn-Out” and wish to “Recharge”
* You’ve never taught before but have heard and felt “the call” to this type of “service work” (which I feel it is – this form is definitely a healing modality) and you care enough to start teaching with a firm foundation that will not let you or your students down and will save you from years of “new teacher” agonies.
* You and your troupe-mates enjoy each of your choreographies, and are becoming more popular in your area. Now you’re looking for something else to add for a set that’s fun and different for you and your audiences. There is no reason you troupe cannot put on an hour’s show as long as you have enough variety. The improvisational aspect of ATS can also take stress away while planning a show. For example, you won’t need to know where the audience is or the entrance/s, as your group’s “front” can move at will, and works particularly well with audiences on both sides, 3 sides or even in the round!

* WHAT DOES IT ENTAIL?

* This intensive and comprehensive course will be held over a period of 3 days. Please allow up to 8 hours per day and in rare cases, longer. The classes will be held in the daytime, from approximately 11 a.m.-6 p.m. It is possible the last day could end a bit earlier, but don’t hold your breath. 
* As I teach more of these, I’ve realized just how difficult it is to “pin-point” the length of the Trainings. But I will say this: now that I have my entire Level 1 Format on one DVD, we may have to spend less time on the moves themselves as long as everyone does their homework in advance by studying that DVD.
* During our time together we’ll go over everything I, my Certified Teachers, and hopefully – YOU - teach in a beginning (Level 1) 8-week course. I will teach you how to teach as we go, presenting steps in the same order I present in an actual class session each week and why. (Those important things that can’t be taught in a DVD.)
* For many steps I will teach the difference between the (mostly) Jamila Salimpour Format origins and ATS. You will learn exactly what makes a step ATS along with other core values intrinsic to this form. You will learn some of its history, too, because knowing where it came from and honoring our dance ancestors is an important part of my teaching style.
* Throughout our time together, I will stress safety for you and your students, which is the number one thing to think about as teachers, especially of a beginning class.

* CLASS SIZE

* Is limited to NO MORE than 10 applicants. YOU are guaranteed personal attention. This is very important to me.

* WHEN?

May 7, 8 and 9, 2010. That’s the Friday, Saturday & Sunday preceding Tribal Fest. So, you’ll have two days off in between to rest and “let it all sink in” while you wait for Wednesday, May 12 – the first day of The Fest! If resting isn’t your idea of fun, visit the Redwood Trees at Armstrong Woods State Park (in the Russian River area), Osmosis Spa, Bodega Bay and anywhere else up or down Highway 1 along the coast (which has beaches galore), Sonoma Mountains and their many parks (on a clear day you can see San Francisco 60 miles away from the top of the range), historic Petaluma, go wine tasting starting just outside Santa Rosa, or get a head start on shopping in Sebastopol, Santa Rosa or even San Francisco.

* WHERE?

The Teacher Training will be held at the same location as Tribal Fest, at the Sebastopol Community Center, 390 Morris St., Sebastopol, CA. We’ll be in the Bolshoi Room, the same room that becomes the Dressing Room during The Show. It’s at the very back of the Main Building.

* WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A REGULAR CERTIFICATE AND THE EQUIVALENCY CERTIFICATE?

* The “regular” Certificate says you are a Certified Teacher for Level One classes in the Kajira Djoumahna/BlackSheep BellyDance Format for ATS BD. It comes with a date, and is good for one year. If I don’t hear from you during that year, you become “un-certified”. To keep your certification current, all you have to do is email me a link or send me a DVD of your 3rd 8-week session, filmed on the 7th or 8th week.
* Please film from the back of the room (or at an angle in the back) so I can see how you and your students have progressed. I’m looking to see that they know what they should by that time, and that you are “on time” with the curriculum. By those last two weeks, they should have pretty long transition practices happening (at least 5 minutes both slow and fast, or longer) and if filmed on Week 7, I can see you review and teach new material as well. Don’t worry, that’s why I give you until your 3rd session, so you, too, can practice and get better. Teaching, like dancing or any other skill, takes practice. I know this, so you can relax. Plus, you’ll have the DVD to practice with now before each class!
* I will offer critiques for you if needed, then send you a new Certificate with a new date. This will continue every year. You never have to pay more money; you only have to teach the Format as it is given to you. Teachers who teach other subjects are welcome to this Certificate as long as they start a whole new class devoted only to this material.
* I expect you to keep in touch with me (not the other way around), and as long as your Certification is current, I am here for you to answer any questions that come up, any time, over the phone 808.891.8891 or if absolutely necessary, via email: TribalFest@aol.com – but please put “For Kajira” in the subject line, or it could get lost in the shuffle. Depending upon the time of year and various factors, it can take me several days to return phone and email messages. But I will return them a.s.a.p. and I thank you for your patience.

The Equivalency Certificate was created for teachers who already have classes going and plan to incorporate some ATS into their existing curriculum, but not teach it exclusively. It also appeals to teachers who’ve always wanted to teach finger cymbals to their students but needed this course for the breakdowns and musical aspects. In rare cases, The Equivalency Certificate is given to dancers who, IMO, still need more work perfecting the moves, isolations, etc., and if they work hard and send me visual proof, I will exchange their certificates for them later. This doesn’t happen often, but I do reserve the right to not certify as a KD/BSBD Format instructor someone who is not ready.

* WHO IS ELIGIBLE?

This class is open to anyone who can:
* Answer, using at least one or two key points, to me and others present in our class “What is ATS and how does it differ from regular bellydance?” (Because you will be asked that a LOT!)  And, yes, of course I will help you.
* Perform a ¾, or Walking, Shimmy on the “up”, full time to at least a medium-fast tempo song, on the balls of the feet and flat-footed.
* Play cymbals full time in at least a basic pattern while dancing. Don’t worry too much, the cymbals pattern/s used in Level One will be taught with each fast movement, just like you will teach them, and they are on the DVD!
* There is no discrimination in my classes due to gender, sexual preference, race, religion or lack thereof, body types/heights/weights, etc.
* For the Teacher Training Certificate (though not necessarily for the Equivalency Certificate) you must be able to physically do the moves with my support and guidance. This means: ability to raise your arms over your head while keeping your shoulders down, putting weight on each foot equally and unequally, including high on the ball and with flat feet, knowing which foot has weight on it, and have at least some of the strength needed to hold your arms out in what I call “Tribal Standard”, elbows to the back, with your shoulders down, for fairly long periods of time.

* WHAT TO BRING EACH DAY:

* The best attitude you can choose that day so your mind is open to new information.
* I’ve purposely started the classes late enough for you to eat breakfast. Please do so! Trust me, you will “last longer” and retain more information if you do. Bring a lunch and snacks for our breaks, and lots of bottled water. The breaks are NOT long enough to go out to eat or buy food to bring back. These are long days, so please come prepared. We will eat inside or just outside the classroom, depending on the day and room we get. If you like deli sandwiches or healthy “to-go” food, why not stop by Whole Foods the night before (if your room has a ‘fridge) or on the way to class.
* Finger cymbals.
* Notebooks are optional – my thorough handouts provide blank back pages for quick notes. I don’t recommend that you attempt to write every word I say - most of it is either in the handout or in the new Level One DVD. I will also give you time to write things down during our breaks.
* Questions! I love questions! So between now and then, if any come up (about anything - dance-wise or personal), write them down and I’ll answer them for you in person (unless you’d prefer privacy, then no problem. I’m sure we can “take five” outside or elsewhere before or after class).
* Please do NOT wear long skirts, pantaloons or loose-fitting tops. It’s imperative that I see your legs and feet as well as your torso. Dance pants, capris, yoga pants, tight sweats, shorts, leggings with a mini skirt or a Rose Hip, Geisha Moth, Mandala Tribal or other short skirts are fine! Cholis, sports bras, midriff tops or form-fitting tank tops are great choices for your upper body. If you have Melodias, please tie them up above the ankle or knee.
* Do let me know if there is anything physical about you I should know about; “tricky” knees, chronic pain, trouble lifting your arms over your head, etc. so we can work within your boundaries of safety.
* Sometimes a person will become emotional during this intense process because we end up moving a LOT of energy, some of which has been “stuffed” or stagnant. This is necessary for growth and is to be dealt with by all present with compassion and, if appropriate, celebration for the breakthrough accomplishment that it is. These are some of the most valuable moments – gifts, really – that teachers can aspire to. If you carry on my traditions, perhaps one day it will happen for you, too. And to you. This dance IS HEALING and that is why my motto continues to be: “It’s much more than a series of steps”…

* PREREQUISITES:

* Each dancer enrolled must purchase at least my new Level One DVD released in 2009 when you sign up and send your tuition payment so you have time to familiarize yourself with the Level 1 moves. Of course, I’ll have all 5 of my DVDs to sell. This is what you’ll follow week-by-week as you start teaching, so it is mandatory that you own at least the new Level One DVD.
* Of course, if you don’t have my first 2 IAMED (International Academy of Middle Eastern Dance) DVDs yet (out in 2003) or all 3 of my new DVDs (I now have a total of 5 DVDs out), you may wish to take advantage of the current, nearly at-cost sale:

All 5 DVDs purchased at one time: $85 plus $6 domestic shipping, international shipping is $11;
3 new DVDs only: $50 plus $6 shipping (int’l. $11);
1 new DVD by itself (for example, your required Level One) is $20 plus $6 shipping (int’l $11).
1 IAMED DVD IS $35, or BOTH FOR $60 (IAMED SELLS THEM FOR $49 EACH!)

* (If you’re reading this after March 15, I can try to send them, but may ask you for cash at the door instead, collected on our first day.)

* VERY IMPORTANT! *

* PLEASE DO NOT ATTEMPT TO PAY FOR YOUR DVD/S VIA THE TRIBAL FEST 10 SHOPPING CART. That is for Classes ONLY.
* PLEASE SEND A TOTALLY NEW PAYPAL TO US FOR THE DVD/s YOU PREFER. Make sure you specify which DVD/s you ordered. Also make sure your return email addy is visible, thanks!
* To order using PayPal, simply press “send money” from the first page of your account to: TribalFest@aol.com If you don’t know how to send money, please email Chuck: TribalFest@aol.com and he can send you an invoice. Don’t forget to put “TF Teacher Training DVDs” in the subject line, to help him find your email more quickly.
* If you prefer using a check or money order, please make it to: BlackSheep
BellyDance and send it to: P.O. Box 791000, Paia, HI, 96779-1000. NO CHECKS WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER MARCH 15. If you’re reading this around then, I will accept CASH IN U.S. DOLLARS on the first day of class.

* TUITION:

* Your special fee is only: $450 for all three days of up to at least 24 hours! All fees in U.S. Dollars, please. Do call me if you’re interested but need to break your payment into two payments due to the financial times we’re all facing.
* You must be paid in full before the first class.
* Please use the TRIBAL FEST SHOPPING CART to pay your tuition for this and any other classes you plan to take at Tribal Fest 10, “A Decade of DecaDance”.

* About Kajira: She is the founder and creator of this ATS format which is based upon her 8 years of study and dance with Carolena Nericcio, creator of the original ATS Form along with her dancers of FatChanceBellyDance. Kajira was lucky to have studied directly with Carolena. From 1991-1999 (or was it 2000?) Kajira listened, learned, and danced her way into numerous FCBD Student Salons, festival shows, restaurants, nursing homes, even hair parlors for AIDs benefits and more.

During these valuable 8 years, Kajira found herself feeling like a bit of a “black sheep” in the traditional sense of the word, as she constantly had ideas as her understanding of the form grew.

Kajira would ask questions such as, “why can’t we enter from the other side once in awhile and just turn the chorus when we get there” to “Why can’t we do Choo-Choos and Turkish (etc.) on the other side?” Carolena’s answer was simple and always the same: “It must be like this to facilitate the improv.” So, Kajira was her “black sheep” long before it became the name of my current dance company. And, to this day they get along great, and Kajira feels they have some amount of mutual admiration. She’s seen quite a lot of BlackSheep costuming on FCBD after they’ve worn it over the years, and now even some moves, perhaps stylized a bit differently, like what Kajira had done with some of hers.

When it became time for Kajira to teach, she took private lessons in person and video critiques of my classes for evaluation. Moves were sometimes changed slightly or a lot, so as not to be a copy and to be ethical. She had Kajira fly to Florida in the late ‘90s to teach her first out-of-state workshop, not because Kajira was her best dancer but because she knew Kajira could teach. When Kajira returned Carolena already knew how well the weekend workshop had gone (4 or 5 hours a day) and told Kajira that she’d send her next time she had a workshop invitation. Kajira was the first teacher she sent to represent herself and her ATS Format – wow!

We are going with a new and what we hope is a better method for the performance spots. In the past we went with Post Marks, first come first served, but this year we are going to have a time frame to send in.

What this means is if you have a troupe and you can not nail everyone down by Nov 30th, you won't miss out, you will have a better chance to get a spot.

You will not be penalized for being late.

Full details will be on the site when it goes live. I know this may cause some to have a question or two.... I will try to handle them best as I can.

I'm in the process of putting together my class description for Kajira (sorry for the delay!) and going over my material and trying to decide what kinds of things I'd like to share. It occurred to me that I should ask you, the esteemed 1,555 members of this tribe what you'd like to learn from an ATS workshop. Folks who already dance ATS or know the basic ATS steps and concepts, what would you be looking for in an EvilEye BellyDance workshop?

My wife, Kajira Djoumahna, after all is special and you all know her better than you know me. I mean she's the one who flies around the world teaching and "Tribal Fest" is her vision and her blood sweat and tears. I of course help out, as you know I am online more than she is! LOL

But I have never been known as "Chuck Djoumahna" ... :-)

There is a great review of Tribal Fest 9 in the current issue of Belly Dane Magazine http://bellydancemag.com/

I love this line....... " The sponsors for this yearly, five day event are Kajira, the director of BlackSheep BellyDance, and her husband Chuck Djoumahna"......

WOW!!! I love this!

But the artical has OUTSTANDING photos taken by Gladys White www.thenakedartisan.com

Some of my faves are the ones of Kajira and BSBD of course, But there are full page pics of Colleens, Suhaila, Michelle Manx (in a GREAT pose BTW) and Shoshana.

Along with smaller pics of about 25 other performers and troupes....

There is a Rachel Brice interview after our story.... If you have a chance pick it up... a keeper!

The Level 1 DVD

You Will Learn:

The tradition and meanings of the gestures used in the ATS Class “Prayer”, or moving meditation
Belly Rolls with cue
ATS Posture
Takseem & Maya
Basis Egyptian with half and full turns
Hip Bump, Pivot Bumps, Shark and Arc Turn
Ribcage Circles with cue for direction change and how the body turns
Level Changes
¾, or Walking, Shimmy, both Full Time and Half Time, with diagonals and not
Pestle and Variation
Arabic, also with 8-count arms
Torso Twist
Turkish with ¼ and ½ turns
Circle Step
Ghawazee with ¼ and ½ turns
Body Waves – 3 sizes

ALL FAST MOVES are taught WITH FINGER CYMBALS to match the count of the music and your steps. You will learn how to find “The One” (or downbeat) and how that applies to your cymbals and dance moves.

PLUS
Both Slow and Fast Transition Practice through all moves learned, so you can follow along at home and get the idea of how this synchronized group improvisational style of dance works, and how to move from one step to another.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Level 2 Vol 1 DVD Includes

* Any moves or combos with specific cymbal patterns are taught with those patterns. It is assumed you know your basic patterns already and can’t wait for more!
* All steps and combos are taught with their cues, so you can learn to lead and follow.
* Everything is in the same order as any of my L2 Certified Teachers and I would teach it personally. This order has been fine-tuned for about 15 years, for a reason: it makes it easier and faster to learn this way, which is always more fun, too!

* Brief Review of the Class Prayer/Pranam, or Centering Exercise
* Horizontal Figure 8s
* Black Widow: in place, while turning with any number of dancers in a circle, and our famous duet pass-by!
* Down, Down, Up, Up: ¼ turns both directions and with optional ¾ shimmy overlay
* FCBD Camel
* Dawn’s Camel Variation
* Old-Style Camel Walk, with optional ¼ turns
* Najla’s Camel Walk Variation, with optional ¼ turns
* One, One and RockRose Variation, both directions with diagonal ½ turns
* Arabic with a Twist, a.k.a. Arabic 3 (brief review). In place and with ½ turns, both sides.
* How to do ¾ Shimmy Overlays on Turkish and Arabic steps and the info needed for layering over any other moves you desire!
* Axl Rose, or Side-to-Side Undulations

* Slow and Fast Transition Practice sections, using the moves you’ve just learned so you can see at least one way they can be put together, as well as to help you integrate them into your muscle memory. As soon as you feel ready, try incorporating steps from my 3 previous DVDs for lots of variation in your presentations. The ultimate goal in ATS, besides sharing your joy with the world, is to never repeat the same dance twice, even with the same dancers and same music. This is one of the most freeing concepts for groups to come along ever, as it was always only available to soloists before FCBD came along. (Read The Tribal Bible for historical photos and interviews.)

* The Arabic Grandmother, with a cue that gives you a lovely, more intricate variation to use with the Slow Arabic Walk from your IAMED series.
* BSBD Corkscrew Turn, both directions
* Basic Egyptian, this time with our “cut-it-in-half” ¼ turn and our crowd-pleasing Bud-n-Flower variation!
* Traditional ATS ¾ Shoulder Shimmies, counted for you so you can understand why they’re called “¾” and how they differ so much from any other shoulder shimmy or shoulder thrust out there. Includes 2 optional hip drop combinations, facing either direction.
* 3-3-7 and Fiona’s Variation, both hips, with pivots both forward and back.
* Dawn’s Variation for Body Waves
* Spanish Walk
* Mo’ Rockin’ Hip Hops with 3 previously unreleased variations
* Crescent Moon, with diagonal ½ turns to both directions
* Wheel of Life Turn
* Reach-n-Sit, both hips with pivots to either direction
* Arabic with Arm Swoops
* Turkish with Arm Swoops

* Two more Transition Practice Sections now, using the moves just taught
* Closing Pranam

* Fully costumed performances by BlackSheep BellyDance!
* Really informative credits you won’t want to miss. = ;-)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NEXT is the list of contents for L2 V2:

* Any moves or combos with specific cymbal patterns are taught with those patterns. It is assumed you know your basic patterns already and can’t wait for more!
* All steps and combos are taught with their cues, so you can learn to lead and follow.
* Everything is in the same order as any of my L2 Certified Teachers and I would teach it personally. This order has been fine-tuned for about 15 years, for a reason: it makes it easier and faster to learn this way, which is always more fun, too!

* Brief review of our Class Prayer/Pranam, or Centering Exercise
* Propellor Turn, both directions
* Vibrational Overlay options for the above, as well as over Figure 8s and Ribcage Circles, with the info needed for you to apply this type of alternating shimmy (not a ¾ shimmy, “vibrations” are 4/4 shimmies) to any move you like if the music calls for it.
* 2 new Torso Twist Variations
* Percussive Maya
* Over, Over, Up, Roll Down with NEW applications from the IAMED DVD that make those diagonal ¼ turns much easier
* 2 Forward, 2 Back, both sides and with ¼ turns
* The Rachel (a.k.a. The Egyptian Goddess)
* Kathak Turn, starting from either side
* Orbits with 3 variations, for varying numbers of dancers!
* Tribal Feat Single Arm Turn, both sides
* Spider Arms with both Takseem and Maya, facing front and with ¼ turns and variations for those.
* Ribcage Infinity with optional turn cue
* Wagon Wheels
* Basic Egyptian with Calibrated Spins, BSBD style

* THREE Transition Practices now: 1 slow and 2 fast! Get ready to dance, keeping your cymbals handy

* Barrel Turns, slow and with an optional fast one
* Princess Turn, both directions
* Jiggy
* Frederique’s Combo
* Contrary Combo
* Backwards Turn
* Tribal Moon Backwards Turns for either stage orientation
* Switchback Combo
* Arabic Partner Pass
* Salsa, with optional cue for a turn

* More formations not previously recorded and demos in and out of them, including our eye-catching Cluster

* Slow and Fast Transition Practices of the steps you’ve just learned
* Closing Pranam

* Two performances by BlackSheep BellyDance!
* And those super-cool credits you can’t tear your eyes away from! = ;-D

Hope this helps... These were all shot by Michelle of Cheeky Girl Productions. She has a tribe here.

Yes my lovely sisters of mindblowing, wombcauldron stirring, evolution, revolution, restitution, regenerative, insight catchment, mindful, authentic dance, movement, theatre, prayer, sisterhood web weavers and healers!!!!!!!!! - (whew you all are an awesome community) - Palika is transforming yet again, responding to Gaia's call and Heavy HIps Tribal Belly Dance as school community is officially closing her business doors (never her heart or inner circle though).

On the close of this full moon my garden is bursting with new life, regeneration of energy, elemental forces manifesting in a mandala outside my cave door and I let go, I release and come full into myself as I am now. I'm stepping into a larger body, mind, soul dance practice and prayer of green photosynthesis, of rich brown microbial web soil life, of myceliating fungal networking of repair and regeneration, of polycultural food forest fractal freedom, water witching winding, permaculture prisms and hope for humans as healers to the Gaia landscape instead of destroyers.

I stand whole and bow richer for this incredible gift of visioning, healing, growth, transformation, learning, sisterhood and community that has been a decade of wonder and enrichment as Heavy Hips Tribal Belly Dance - a gift from the Goddess, unsought but heeded when she beckoned. I have been humbled, stretched, pushed, pulled, challenged, excavated, oxygenated, heard, sung to, healed, blown out of my mindset and bodyset, joyed, buoyed, formed and reformed, found, lost, strung out, discovered, appreciated, scorned, blissed out, gifted, stunned, rooted, called, loved and loved some more, recognized, returned, rerooted, caressed, birthed and died, freed, and deeply blessed on this exploration/journey. I offer gratitude, I offer thanks, I bow to the Divine in all who have come to learn, come to heal, come to transform, and come to find their voice and service in the loving womb of Heavy Hips. The groundbreaking Heavy Hips website (on which many built) will remain up as a template and inspiration for women finding their way on the path of dance as prayer, healing, celebration and sisterhood.

While I have been working on the inner levels of release of Heavy Hips for over 3 years now - the physical release of the accoutrements grounds me in the elemental material plane of letting go. I have been a collector of functional art and beauty, both ethnic and handcrafted for over 3 decades. Much of which has been amassed as a Director of a Performance Troupe and Dance School and Bazaar is yearning for new hips to illuminate and empower, new hands to be caressed and protected by, new walls to shine their rich heritage out from.

Thus all is being auctioned and sold on Ebay - new treasures being posted daily. May you give gratitude and haven for these beauties but know that they are not who you are. Here is the link for my listings - you can also search by seller - Mayadevi108.

Here is the detailed blurb for the collection.
Its the end of an era! The acclaimed Heavy Hips Tribal Belly Dance Company and School and The Gypsy Closet Bazaar have had their final bloom. My exquisite costume and accessories inventory is up for new stewardship and cherishing. Hopefully by you! Heavy Hips and The Gypsy Closet set the standard for stunning quality vintage textiles and silver and touchable magnificent committment to natural materials such as silk, wool, satins and cotton. All items for sale are gently used unless stated as new and have been cared for by the meticulous hand of Palika. The prices here are set to be a good deal and have been an investment for me. Please respect that quality crafted goods are not available at KMART prices. If you are a vendor and want the entire inventory we can discuss a market discount.

So... Dive in. Relish the opulence of quality collectible vintage tribal mirror cholis of the Kutch and Banjara tribes, collectible ethnic silver and jewelry, silk Flying Skirts spinning skirts that drip with beauty, tribal textiles like saya gosha fringe and tassel hip wraps from Uzbekistan, Tajikastan and Turkmenistan, coin and metal riveted Afghan belts (which are really sleeves from their fabled ethnic dresses), vintage (not new) Banjara mirror belts, Banjara embroidered and embellished tribal skirts, Flying Skirts silk bloomers and cholis and yummie silk veils in jewel tones from LRose Designs, antique silk wedding veils from India, Turkoman and Uzbek coats and more. I'm also selling related media and props - a perfect trio of gourds and brass waterpots, thick stemmed glasses for dancing on, candle glasses and other bits.

In gratitude to Life, Earth, Air, Fire, Water and Spirit, with a prayer to remain in service - I bow with folded hands.

Sadly I was unable to make it to Tribal Fest this year. I have an ad in this years TF program...I asked a friend if she could pick up an extra copy of the program for me so I could have one to save, but sadly by the time she got to Tribal Fest on Sunday all the programs were sold out.

So I am writing this to ask if there is anyone who has a program they don't want any more or an extra copy if they would be willing to send it to me? I would be happy to pay for the program and for the shipping!

As many of you know, I was not able to attend Tribal Fest 09 because I tore my right ACL in April and was heading into surgery at that time. I do have to give props to my troupe - Tribal Moon - who did an amazing ATS performance on Saturday afternoon!

I wanted to check in with the Tribe family and find out if other's have stories to share about ACL tears, recovery, performing post-ACL recovery, resources or advice that you care to share

I live in Califonia, but after much research, I found an amazing ACL doctor located in Bend, OR. Her name is Cara Walther of Desert Orthopedics. She is the US Women's Olympic Ski knee doc, and has made it her life's passion to study knees of women and girls. Seems that our physical make-up makes us more prone to ACL injury.

I am banished to Bend, OR for 6 weeks, through end of June due to the type of ACL surgery I had. It's a great technique called Healing Response that allows for 1/2 time recovery, so I'll be dancing again in 4 months, v.s 6-9 months. It can only be done if the ACL tear is very close to the femer and the ligament still in good shape. They tap a few holes into the femer bone causing it to bleed. The stem cells cause a blood clot and the ACL binds to the clot, in the femer and all is well again.

The physical therapy requires a lot of dedication on the patient's part. PTs say the love working with dancers because we are so motivated to get our knees back to 100%.

Would love to get a thread going for others to learn and share.

Layla and I were very happy overall with the system we had. We only had a few technical glitches (signal interruptions), and only 5 of the 76 orders we took had a problem that was able to be corrected later. Not bad! :)

Between now and next year we will be working on improving upon what we did. Our filming approach was based on suggestions not only from Chuck & Kajira but from several other dancers we have spoken with (including my lovely Layla). I was told for the most part dancers buy the videos because they want to have a nice quality copy, want to critique themselves & like to be able to see their body movements, so minimal zooms and no closeups. I have to assume their are some performers out there who do like the closeups, zooms and multiple angles, & if this describes you you should chime in. This way I will know if it would be worth it for me to bring an extra camera with an operator. This would cost a bit extra of course. I don't have a live switching device so patience would be required after the show for the post production work.

One way I know we can improve is to ask the dancers to be specific about how they would like to be filmed when they pre order. Layla will be streamlining our ordering process for that. We will also have a designated assistant helping us with the filming as it is an all day process & will cut down on our fatigue level. ( I had to get an 1 1/2 hour massage the day after TF to relieve my right shoulder! ) LOL!

If you are planning on dancing and ordering a DVD in 2010 make sure you send us a jpeg ahead of time of you or your troupe and we will print it directly on your DVD. There were about a dozen dancers who pre ordered with us and who did this and they LOVED it!

If you have any suggestions for us for next year please PM Layla or myself as neither of us log on to Tribe much anymore.

We had such a great time! Thank you Chuck & Kajira for all that you do, and to all of the dancers who make up this fantastic community!

See you all next year for the BIg Number 10! :)

We will discuss injury prevention and self-care; learn ways of protecting overused areas in bellydance--such as psoas, low back, and hips--, and deepen our practices to stretch, strengthen, and activate the body in preparation for bellydance. A great foundation for any level dancer, of any style bellydance. And a necessary addition for Teachers in their tool kit of how to break down and explain safe, proper technique and give one-on-one student feedback and attention to detail.

Come develop a more connected conversation with your own body. Increase body awareness, core stabilization, and presence in movement, taking your dance to the next level, from amateur to artist.
All material will be directly applied to bellydance movement.

Pls. bring a yoga mat, a journal for note taking, and water bottle.
We invite you to also bring your specific questions, ailments, or injury concerns to be addressed.

Sat. June 5 1:00-6:00pm
Sun. June6, 11:00-3:00pm.
at The Center of Worldance, 230 West Main St., Alhambra, CA 91801

$150 before May 31; $165 at the door.
Paypal aubre@aubredance.com to reserve your spot!

Saturday:
1-2: Pilates For Dancers Warm-up (aubre)
2-4: The spine! The biomechanics of spinal stabilization, articulation, and extension/backbending, from both Yogic and Pilates perspectives. (team teaching, Aubre & Deb.)
4-6pm: Lower Quadrant: The Root of it All (Back, hips, pelvis, sacrun, & Legs) (Aubre)

Sunday:
1-2: Core Integrated Yoga for Bellydancers Warm up (Deb)
2-4: Upper Quadrant: The neglected area of Bellydance. (deb)
Free up the Neck/head, Shoulders, Spine, & Sidebody to create that intoxicating look and feel of ridiculously slow, slinky bellydance; allow for sharper isolations; and create more fluid, articulated movements from the head to the fingertips. Focus will be on the importance and biomechanics of the shoulder girdle, and how it relates to –well--everything you do in bellydance. This module will include lecture, experiential anatomy, and therapeutic yoga/somatic practice, with hands-on adjustments. All material will then be applied to bellydance posture, technique, and combos, with particular focus on arms, core, and ribcage.
4-5: Bellyrolls and Abs--The wisdom bodies’ secrets.

Hey there Everyone!

I wanted to clear up any confusion about the Video stuff. I have been getting a few requests from dancers to please post more of my footage and from dancers who performed asking me to post their footage. In the initial announcement by Layla that we would be filming TF this year http://bsbd.tribe.net/thread/e541bd8b-81f3-42ab-8028-1d41f075e599 it says that the Youtube uploads were an optional service for a little extra money. The reason we set it up this way is because Layla and I are also wedding Djs www.truelovesound.com and we are just now entering the busiest time of the year so our time is super valuable. I am so happy that I found a way to be able to get the DVDs to the dancers immediately after the performances or I would have been overwhelmed with post production work and mailing DVDs that I have literally no time for. It worked out great for the dancers and for us as well! Thank you to all who ordered from us, and sorry about any confusion about the Youtube thing.

For those dancers who have video of their performances but do not know how to convert it, it is now easier than ever to do it as their are numerous and free applications you can download ....

Here is a free download called "Super" that will do the job if you have a PC. http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html

Here's my first TF performance!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Hvg6pGhOP0 I am so grateful to TABU, Marjhani, and Jeremiah backstage for helping me mellow and Onca for making me laugh right before I went on stage! It got me up there. After that, it was way too much fun for their to be room for nerves! So, yay!! :)

Aloha all...

We are finally done with the aftermath of all that is Tribal Fest, I am packed and Kajira is packing and tomorrow we leave for home.

Tribal Fest Number 9, Number 9 (3x3) was outstanding! We both had a great time and there are so many people we want to thank and I hope that I am not going to miss anyone, but I know we will.....

Cherie- she took the year to deal with getting the staff together and even with the new baby, kept things running! Even while sweeping the floor.

All the staff, whoever you all are! We hope that you come back and do it all again.

Noey- our daughter who was there for us when we needed help organizing the front door staff and who with her partner Pat would run and do anything needed on the week-end including getting me water so I didn't have to leave the sound booth, getting raffle prizes from the vendors, and helping her Mom so much at the BSBD booth and all that stuff..

2 people most never see but without them TF would not happen. Jeff and Phil, my 2 main buds who are there all year long and if I need a cord, or someone to put up a mic on stage or get me Rum, they are there. They supply the sound, get the backdrop, run errands, store evereything Tribal Fest and have been in my life for 41 and 20 years respectively. Love ya boys!

Steve - What can we say. You are there all week-end, helping put the show together on Friday and I think one of the last to leave on Sunday! YAY!

David Ludwig Designs for the amazing backdrop!

Lori, Megan, Therese, Azza, Stacy, Najla, Gretchen and Dhyana who danced with Kajira and made her so happy. You also helped working the door, the BlackSheep booth, checked classes in, calmed Kajira and in turned calmed me.

We thank the BlackSheep Sista Betty for trying to get here but who was held up at the airport trying to get through for 12 hours! Taiwan would not let her out due to high body temp and she was soooooooo sad. Next year!

Guido and Mahalia our announcers who help keep us on time, work LONG hours, crack jokes and put up with my music and never get enough thanks!

Extra love for Megan for bringing Daria who worked her butt off!

Hiya! For the free cookies, water myster, good vibes and bringing love to Da Fest! Also for naming Tribal Fest 10 "A Decade Of DecaDance".

We would love to thank all the teachers and vendors who without, it would not be Tribal Fest. The love and support that you show us, the flexibility in working with us, the "aloha" that you all bring, sharing spaces, teaching classes, hanging out, gosh,,, mahalo nui loa!

Our new Chef Shawn. His first year and dispite a few hiccups, did great and kept us all fed during the week.

Politti!!! - The maker of the program, dealing with all the challenges and putting up with us.

Tempest!!! - The "Keeper Of The Site" since neither Kajira nor I can do much on the computer, we rely on you so much.

The Jam Banders - Jeremiah, Jeff and August! WOW! what can we say? Take my idea run with it and you gave us something so special.

Amar- For talking me into doing a Hula Dance. I was so scared to be up there, doing that on-stage where so many fantastic dancers have got there start,,,, wow, maybe next year I'll teach a hula class..... ummmmm, not!!! LOL

Ashok at The Sebastopol Inn who is so great for the people who stay there. Having wine tasting in the courtyard, keeping it to dancers only, not worrying about getting his white hand towels covered in dancer make-up and for going out of his way for Kajira and myself. Are there cheaper places? Sure, but no place like home!

Every single one of you who bought tickest for the raffle for Best Friends Animal Society and extra props for the teachers and vendors who gave us amazing gifts to give away.

Kajira got to take a whole class this year and we think it might have been the first time, so she would like to thank Carolena Nerrico for teaching a wonderful class and for starting the whole ATS movement.

Both Jeffe & Layla of "True Love Sound" and Gladys of "Naked Artistsan Photography" for documenting the show. We hope that you all got a DVD and stills from these two because they did outstanding work and it shows on the stuff we have seen on Tribe.

Sashi - You left Kajira two outstanding uplifting messages that helped her make it through the week. It shows the true love and support that is so important during the event and for many months afterward.

Every single performer who graced the Tribal Fest stage. The first timers to the old timers, you brought it, you raq'd it and that is what it is all about! A super huge Mahalo Nui Loa!

And last but not least, every single one of you, who attened from down the road to those who came from around the world, 19 different countries this year, not counting the USA.

We get e-mails from people who want to dance but say that they are nervous because it's "THE TRIBAL FEST STAGE!"..... LOL... We tell them that there is not a better place to dance anywhere! The people watching are the most supportive anywhere. Every single one of you has been right where that person has been and you show them that there is no reason to be scared, your screams, zahareets and vibe come from the hall, onto the stage and fill the performers with love, and this year, for the first time ever, I can personally vouch for that and how great you all are.

You support the teachers by taking their classes, you support the vendors by buying their wares, you support the animals and you support Kajira and myself by being there.

We can not thank you enough and we hope that when planning your 2010, with all the choices that you have for events to go to, that you keep in mind Tribal Fest 10, May 12-16 because without you, it would not be.

Love happiness, light and mahalo,

Kajira and Chuck

I'll be launching my new music mixing workshop for dancers "Mastering your Mix" at Fusion Fest this year.
I'll also be DJing the afterparty. WooHoo :)
This'll be my first time there, and i'm excited. I've heard nothing but awesome feedback from Unmata, Freyja, Jeffe and Layla, among others over the past couple of years - and have met the wonderful ladies putting on the festival, and I can't wait to see them (and I send out a big thank you to them for bringing me out).

I just have to say that I had the time of my life this week!! I am new to the Tribal scene (only about 3 years hit or miss) so I had never taken any classes than from my local peeps. I want to share my geekness with you...

Carolina's Shimmies class was so much fun! I love ATS and how playful it can be and working my hips and zills together is invigorating. I take my ATS classes from Raven's sister studio and have fun but it was an honor to take a class from the Goddess herself.

Suhaila's class kicked my butt royally! I was walking out of a shower after her class. Rock on!

Ariellah...what can I say...I am hooked on the Ariellah-ness that is gooey and yummy. It was amazing to actually sit down (since I was exhausted at this point any way) and just listen for once and not bounce in like the energizer bunny. Inspiring and lovely are some terms I can use freely!

My next adventure was quite a ride with Amy Sigil's class....OMG it was worth the trip to have my butt seriously kicked by this woman! Her energy is amazing and she never misses a beat. Not to mention her perfomance rocked the house when everyone chanted to get her and UNMATA on the stage!

Then my own personal bias favorite...TABU!! Yes, the locval Vegas lovelies!! It was so much fun to not be able to walk right the next day after doing so many squats! I got a real feel for what it was like to be a zombie and it was so much fun to be able to personalize a bit and gert into it...too bad we didn't get to finish the choreo because I know it is awesomeness!

The shows were amazing and the vendors so sweet. I am so glad I had tax return to spend because I couldn't pass up getting enough stuff for almost two costumes!! EEkkk...don't tell my hubby. Thank you for making this event and I look forward to getting onto the bandwagon for next year!!

Holy Tribal Mutha! I had the best time this year at TF, and it is amazing to me because I was so busy all three days! Layla too, we both felt something special this year, a very cohesive family vibe for sure! And it was great to be able to hang out next to Chuck for three days! He's a kick!

Layla and I would like to thank all of the dancers for their video love! We were not even expecting to be as busy as we were, in fact we ran out of DVDs Saturday night and had to go to Rite Aid for more Sunday morning, They only had 1 spool of 25 and we snatched it! LOL! We absolutely loved being able to capture all of the dancers and hand them a DVD immediately following their performances. The looks we got were funny as hell! LOL! "WOW, already?" But what we really loved were the dancers who told us how thrilled they were that they were able to watch their performances in their hotel rooms the same night. They were overjoyed and it made us feel the same... )

Our apologies to the few dancers that happened to be performing during our couple of tech glitches. Thankfully we only had two minor ones throughout the whole weekend.
If anyone has any technical issues with their DVDs don't hesitate to let me know....

A huge thank you to Chuck & Kajira for inviting us to film for you all, and putting on such a wonderful event!

Here is the link to the TF 09 Youtube Channel. Videos will be going up over the next few days. http://www.youtube.com/user/TF93x3

Oh yeah, one of the performers today told me she uploaded her performance to Youtube and and the audio was disabled by Youtube. Seems they are scanning the audio these days when you upload. If this continues to be an issue, I will be bypassing Youtube and uploading to Vimeo..... I have already created a TF 09 channel there just in case.... http://vimeo.com/4675093
