I can't come this year. Money is just bad. So I'm selling the following workshops via Paypal.

To buy a workshop:

1) Send me a PRIVATE MESSAGE on Tribe. Include your NAME, the email address I should invoice, and *whether you will be paying by credit/debit card, or by a balance transfer/e-check*. This is crucial since it will make a difference to which account I invoice you from. I strongly prefer balance transfer/e-check since they don't take fees out of the amount you send me.

2) When I invoice you, send payment within 24 hours. If you don't pay me within 24 hours, I will sell the workshop(s) to someone else if they have asked for it.

3) When you pay me, I can make arrangements to fax you a copy of the receipt for payment so you can show it at the door, if you get me the information by Monday.

PLEASE don't try to reserve workshops by posting here. I will take requests first-come, first-served, as they arrive in my Tribe in-box.

I will do my best to update here to reflect what has sold.

Today's April 14th...meaning in a month, Tribal Fest 8 will be kicking off! Very excited for this year in so many ways - have a slew of new products to vend, offering two new workshops, performance collaborations, seeing folks I haven't seen in a long time, big bowls of sangria, meeting new peeps, and so much more.

But I was also thinking this morning as I drove to work, where I was at when I first heard of Tribal Fest. I was just starting out my journey into the realm of bellydance, located in Rhode Island, blissfully reading all of Kajira's articles and interviews online, oogling over (and eagerly printing) photos of Fat Chance, Invaders of the Heart, Romani, and others..I must have gone through a ream of paper printing out the articles and photos for reference. And then I heard about this festival - the first ever Tribal Fest! I called my friend in CA and asked her where this weird place called "Sepastopol" was....only an hour or two from her! And where we would be moving to! But not soon enough! We wouldn't be out there in time to experience this first festival ourselves. I comforted myself with the knowledge that SOON, I too would be out there, and I would most certainly be there for #2!!!

And I was :) I dragged my friend up for one day, it took us forever, because it was Bay To Breakers, and her "shortcut" was blocked off, and we got routed way out of our way, and it was raining and the traffic horrible on 101...but we got there eventually! So many beautiful things, so many dancers! And I bought the loudest pair of gold and red Indian pants from Sharon Moore (who I had met and chatted with online!), which became part of my Kali costume in Dhyanis' "Living Goddess" Show. I remember looking at them on the way home and my friend telling me to close the bag, or else I'd cause an accident b/c they were so loud ;)

The following fall, I would return to the same venue for Festival Fantasia, the sister "cabaret" festival for TF, and would grace the corner of the stage as part of Azar's troupe, Dancers of the Mystic Sun, in their "Oya" Afro-Belly piece, as I helped sing the chants and do the chorus and not fall of the stage. Oh my gawd, how could I do this ever by myself? Out HERE? SO much different then performing back in RI!

But come Tribal Fest 3, there I was, sporting my second pair of dreadfalls (the peacock ones debuted at Rakkasah) in black and white, ghawazee sleeve falls, handmade bra, doctored-up Indian metal belt, and assuit skirt (a wonderful gift from my friends), dancing to System of a Down! Ansuya's Troupe "Ya Leil" performed! OMG! Such beautiful amazing ladies! (I didn't get to see too much b/c we were vending in the Russian Room..).

Tribal Fest 4 was an amazing and profound experience for me. This year, I performed a duet with Anaar - "The Becoming", aka the Peacock Sex Dance. I had been struggling with my place in the dance world, and who/where was I as a dancer, why did I dance? And I'll never forget the amazing feeling I had after performing with Anaar - it's like everything made sense, and I had so much FUN dancing with her - it really was magick! This was also the year of the debut of the corset belt. Laura Rogan, Sherri W, Sharon K, and Sooz were among the very first ladies to buy my designs that year. I also believe this was the last Tribal Fest that Ellen Cruz was a part of, and I'll never forget the beautiful correspondence we shared afterwards about the event. I think this was the year of the impromptu dance jam at the Italian restaurant!

The next year, Tribal Fest 5, Kajira invited me to teach this strange fusion called Gothic Bellydance. OMG, I couldn't believe it sold out! This year was what I now refer to my "running, jumping, climbing trees!" performance, which was a mix of Knossos and Disturbed. I graciously lost my top and got fishnet burns (in that pattern) on my knees. Learned a lot from both experiences :)

Tribal Fest 6....ok, how come my memory is better the further I go back? This year is a little fuzzy in my memory. Another GBD workshop, and thankfully I didn't lose any articles of clothing, and wore two pairs of underwear to offset the super high-cut slit of my "Salomatra" piece and had invisible straps on my bra.

Tribal Fest 7 - probably explains why I have very little memory ;) Last year, I was determined that Keith and I would move to the East Coast right after TF7. Ever tried preparing to move and making stock and preparing for two workshops and two performances all at the same time? While still working a day job? Yes, I was insane. We did it, but if I ever try to do that again, I hope someone distracts me with shiny things and whacks me over the head. Anaar and I did another duet, which was magickal and amazing for both of us (and very close to costume disaster), and then in my "Gothfia" solo, I had a near-burlesque experience :) This was the first year that Aradia made it out from RI, and we really re-connected. And there was a most magnificent bowl of sangria.

And so here we are, a month away from Tribal Fest 8, and I'm amazed at the years (at least what I can remember lol). All of the people I've met over the years, friends made and what came from all of those connections. And how weird it will be flying out there instead of just driving up from the Bay Area, and coming without my husband Keith, because someone has to watch the cat.

And all because Kajira decided to create a festival.

Thank you Kajira (and of course Chuck!), and everyone else who lends their energy to making Tribal Fest the amazing event it is - vendors, performers, volunteers, students, and teachers.
I would only need a ride out there, not a ride back, I can get to anywhere in the bay area that the BART will take me to meet you. Please let me know.

Instead of a "bump" (or hustle, slide, shimmy, etc) I thought I'd start a new thread and add a little bit more info.

What: Videography of your solo or troupe performance(s)
When: You tell me! Fri-Sun.
How much: Depends on what you want....

-- single camera
-- multiple cameras
-- unedited (you keep raw footage)
-- choreographer's multi-angle review (with video wall option)
-- etc.

Of course, I'll be taking walk-up orders at the show, but it'll help me plan if you contact me ahead of time (many of you already have.. thank you!)

What you should send me:
-- your real name and dance name
-- your contact info (so I can send you the DVD when we're done).. address, phone, e-mail
-- the date & time of your performances
-- the length of each performance
-- which videography option you'd like (from my XLS/PDF)
-- anything special you think would be helpful (e.g. if a troupe, do you stay tight or use the whole stage?)

How to pay: Check or cash at the show will work, or paypal to: rob@candlelight-productions.com

Here are two links to the different options/configurations I'm offering (in XLS and PDF form):
Bodega Bay! Yummy food (a bit pricey) and a beach
The Duck Club at the Bodega Bay Lodge in Bodega Bay (about a half hour drive).

*if you have transportation, I highly recommend the short and beautiful drive to
Willowood Market in Graton (dinner).
*Hidden gems?
I would say the Underwood and the Willowwood in Graton
Hard Core Cafe just south of town,
Pony Espresso at Bill's Market on the way to the beach,
Sebastopol Cookie Company on Main St. all have organic coffee and offer organic milk for your latte and espresso needs.
Farmer's Market is on Sunday in the Plaza from 10 (ish) to 1:30. You may find delicious pastries and home made tamales there.
GTO's Seafood House - 234 Highway 116 South - expensive but excellent seafood
Pasta Bella - 796 Highway 116 South - awesome, somewhat pricey Cal-Italian, good breakfast
Shangri La - 1706 East Cotati Blvd. - awesome Himalayan
*If you want a greasy-spoon breakfast, head to Pine Cone, 162 North Main St. Very funky.

Worth a relaxing day of strolling and sniffing (bring your camera)
Luther Burbank Home & GardensSanta Rosa Ave & Sonoma Ave, Santa Rosa, CA 95404, US

Let us not forget:
BOOZE AND PARTYIN
Dive bars:
Jasper O'Farrells (6957 Main St., downtown, on the south side of the street across from Screamin' Mimis) According to the Sebastopol police chief this establishment is responsible for the majority of the calls for service they get. When Jasper's owner proposed buying the larger pub just to the south (now the Sebastopol Brewing Co.), the police chief put up the kind of fight you'd expect from Greenpeace protecting the last humpbacked whale. I've been in there once for lunch and had their rather nice fish and chips and a draft Sierra Nevada and had a fairly quiet time (ignoring the all-day drinkers falling off their stools). They have loud music on weekends. Don't worry if the big plate glass window out front is broken. They'll still be open.

Greenhouse Tavern (116 South Main St., downtown just south of the big intersection): According to the a saleswoman/receptionist at the newspaper where I used to work (just around the corner), this is the favorite daytime hang-out of many area tweakers. I have never been inside. The guys who stand outside and smoke all day scare me. Whatever you do, don't go to the restaurant next door (Appletrees). It sucks.

Old Main St. Saloon (153 North Main St., north of the big intersection, just south of Whole Foods): Lots of draft beer and old men drinking all day. According to local legend, this pub is the one the participants in the fight that gave Sebastopol its name came to drink afterward.

Shiny bars:

The Sebastopol Brewing Co. (268 Petaluma Ave., if you're walking it's a block down Petaluma Ave. from the intersection that leads you to Whole Foods. If you're driving go down Main St. and turn left into the big parking lot a block down. Drive east and you'll get to their parking lot). For many years this pub was the Powerhouse (so called because it used to hold the powerhouse for the electric Petaluma-Sebastopol railroad). Then it was the Stone Elephant (the owners found a fossil mammoth on their property up in Lake County and brought it to display here). Now it's called Sebastopol Brewing Co. and still has good eats and a microbrewery. Don't miss their rootbeer.

Starlight Wine Bar (6761 Sebastopol Ave. - in Gravenstein Station): This bar will be very conveniant to those of you staying in the Sebastopol Inn. The one time I went it was in its previous incarnation, but I understand it still serves small plates of nifty California food and pours local wine. It had very reasonable prices when I went, which may be why it went out of business.

I'm only including places within walking distance for the obvious reason. If you want to know about places further out and promise to have a designated driver, I'll tell you about Red's Recovery Room, the Washhoe House and Russian River Brewing Co. And there are lots of places to buy booze so you can drink in the privacy of your tent, RV or hotel room.

As Tribal Fest nears, I become more and more excited! This year EvilEye BellyDance not only performs, but I'm teaching a workshop AND vending some goodies afterwards on the back deck of the Youth Annex building.

Performance:
Stacey, Azza, Marie and I will be performing our EvilEye ATS set on Friday night at 10:48pm. As Kajira mentioned in an email or somewhere--"proof that ATS is alive and well!". We're sandwiched between Pin-up Girl BellyDance and Princess Farhana. Can you say unruly fun?

Workshop:
Sunday at 11:15-1:15. Don't party too hard on Saturday night! Save yourself for one more day of dancing and shopping! The workshop is not sold out, so stop by and register at the door. Although I've taught at TF in the past, as a member/teacher of Kajira's format for ATS, this is the very first official EvilEye BellyDance workshop at TF and we'll cover "new" material. I will be assisted my members of EEBD.

I'm looking forward to sharing what we've been working on since our inception in Sept of 2006. Everything is geared towards group improv as well as both left and right hip leading (Kajira's biggest contribution to ATS, IMO). If you're not into ATS, the material can easily be adapted to choreography. We've worked hard to include movements not usually found in ATS, but are rooted in traditional/folkloric bellydance and then adapted for use in ATS by adding or changing arm/head/ribcage positioning. Gotta keep that open and uplifted look!

I will cover steps and combinations for slow, medium and fast tempo music with sensible, subtle and easy-to-remember cues. The names of the moves aren't bad, either! I am afflicted with a joy of teaching and a love of words, so I am committed to seeing that attendees not only have a great time, but learn the material in easy to swallow, bite-sized chunks. We WILL be improvising together by the end of class.

Bring finger cymbals! We'll not only go over patterns that correspond to specific steps, but (if there's time) we'll explore improvising with cymbals while we dance. It never stops.

Informal Vending:
I'll be bringing Lori's EvilBazaar to the back deck after the workshop. Take time to paw through my stuff and chat with me about class, dance, life, chewing gum, etc...I'll have all manner of various and sundry items related to bellydance. The more you buy, the better the deal! Everything must go so I can start all over again. (:

Thanks to KD and Chuckers for putting on this, my favorite event! What an awkward sentence.

See you there!

on Saturday May 17 in downtown Sebastopol, MADURO will be droppin his new tracks and we'll be celebrating the release of his new album SEIGE, and the launch of Octofoil Records.

Maduro's new full-length album Siege is now available for pre-ordering on Octofoil Records and will be available in late April 2008. The album will be available at TRIBAL CARAVAN on April 26th at Amar's vending table. You can pre-order and get your copy right away once it rolls off the presses, or pick up a copy at the show. http://www.octofoil-records.com/

Siege, Maduro's most complex release yet, captures the archetypal internal and external struggle between opposing forces, punctuated with Middle Eastern and South Asian progressions, crunched break beats and fragments, and industrial highlights. Siege features significant contributions from renowned world musician Tim Rayborn.

It's been my tradition every Friday night for the past 12+ years to celebrate Shabbat (the Jewish sabbath thing) by lighting candles, sharing wine with family and friends, and tearin' into some Challah (delicious braided bread). They say it's an amazing holiday because it comes every week.. and it's the oddest holiday, cuz we're told to "rest".. how odd... us humans have to be told to chill out.. you'd think that would come easy!

Anyhow, my most joyous ones have been outdoors under the stars, with friends. Seeing as we'll be at Tribal Fest, I thought it might be nice to gather somewhere outdoors, light the candles, share some wine and Challah... and whatever else anyone feels like doing. I can pack some *most* delicious Challahs, and can bring some small percussion instruments...

Anyone interested ?

FWIW, I began my videography career 7+ years ago when a beautiful dancer named Kassia asked me to record her Hafla, after being burned by her other videographer who butchered the show by not tracking (following/anticipating) dancers and zooming too close, missing entrances and taking forever to turn the thing around.

In our defense.... some videographers *can* get it right... maybe it's because I've drummed with/for dancers that I "get it"? Who knows?! Or maybe it's because I love music, love the dance, and love the people who I've met along the way!

Anyhow (this is a bit of a cross-post from the other thread), I'd love to make a DVD production of the dancers/troupes at Tribal Fest, for you! I can do single-camera or multi-camera shoots and will throw in "bonus material" from the festival too.

“UNDERBELLY”

(A YEAR IN THE LIFE OF DANCER PRINCESS FARHANA)

WEST COAST PREMIERE SCREENING !

THURSDAY, MAY 15, 2008, 7:30PM

“Underbelly”, a feature-length documentary by award-winning director Steve Balderson, will make its West Coast Premiere Thursday, May 15, 2008 at Tribal Fest!

Providing the viewer with a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the world of contemporary American belly dance, as well as one woman’s personal journey, “Underbelly” traces a year in the life of international star Princess Farhana. Shot on locations across the globe (including loads of footage from Tribal Fest 2007). “Underbelly” is as insightful, inspirational and educational as it is raunchy and hilarious! It reflects the view from the stage and the personal lives of the dancers, while covering the dance itself - how it enriches and heals lives - and addresses the raging controversy Princess Farhana generated by pioneering the fusion of belly dance with classic burlesque.

Candid interviews with stars of the field such as Kajira Djoumahna, Samantha Riggs, Onca O’Leary, Rachel Brice, Lee Ali, Rachel Lazarus Soto, Marta Schill, Politti Ashcraft, Blume Bauer and John Compton bump up against the opinions of students and hobbyists. Outrageous differences in opinion are offered by belly dance purists and innovators alike, as well as burlesque stars like Miss Dirty Martini, Jo Weldon and Kate Valentine. Performances by Princess Farhana, comedian/dancer Margaret Cho, Blacksheep Belly Dance, Rachel Brice, Jim Boz , Tempest, illuminate the range of Oriental dance styles, the relationship between burlesque and belly dance, and how each artist puts a personal signature on the world’s oldest dance, as it’s performed today.

ZAGHAREET MAGAZINE

“Gutsy and honest...with insight into the history of belly dance, the evolution of different dance styles, and why so many dancers are drawn to this beautiful art form…You’ll definitely want to see this movie and add this DVD to your collection.”

SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE
“Holds nothing back!”

FILM THREAT
“UNDERBELLY is so well done and feels so complete that it almost transcends the subject matter and becomes a documentary about passion…an unexpected source of inspiration!”

FRANTIK MAGAZINE
“In this eccentric and wonderful documentary film by Steve Balderson, Underbelly captures the essence of Princess Farhana and the underground, taboo world of belly dancing…”

BELLY DANCE TV
“This story - and the people in it - represents an intriguing part of our modern culture. "Underbelly" is an artfully crafted documentary.”

Hello there!
I have a bunch of shoots lined up over the course of the festival and I could really use a fun energetic person with an interest in photography to assist me with carrying equipment and lighting. What's in it for you?
- you get tips and tricks for photo studio work and performance photography (lighting, set up, making your subject feel comfortable)
- my shoots are always lots of fun
- if you are solitary, you get someone to hang out with :)
- you get to meet some really talented and beautiful performers!

So if you 're interested, pm me or comment here!
Thanks,
Evi
