Were there any groups at TF this year who played multiple zill patterns while doing ATS/ITS? If so who and are their clips anywhere?

Re: Interesting Zill Performances?
Mon, May 25, 2009 - 2:45 PMHey Barb:
My troupe 'Nomadic Tapestry' did a zill entrance, not so much with ATS moves and there was no music behind us. Here is a link to the page that Jeffe put it on.

Another troupe played zills with ATS, and their performance is up on Jeffe's Youtube page. I wish I could remember their name. I didn't get to see it live, but it rocks on Youtube! Hopefully they will chime in and let you know who they were. -

Re: Interesting Zill Performances?
Mon, May 25, 2009 - 3:08 PMHi Barb,
We (Gypsy Fire) do ATS-based improv, and do multi-zills w/our dance....
Here's the link to our 3rd song from TF set....we were thrilled to share the stage with members of our student troupe, Sister Fire this year!

p.s. I think the troupe Hala referenced is Awalim: they are on Jeffe's videos from Fest.... :)
p.p.s. Nomadic Tapestry's opener was awesome! :)

Re: Interesting Zill Performances?
Wed, May 27, 2009 - 6:25 AMThanks a million for these links. All of the performances were quite wonderful. I love using zills in ATS/ITS and have wondered how to vary them while performing. Evil Eye....you showed it could be done....and very well too!!!!!
Anyone do any 9/8's with ATS? And with zills? -

Re: Interesting Zill Performances?
Wed, May 27, 2009 - 7:41 AMThanks, Barb!
Yep, EvilEye BellyDance did a "song" of different zill patterns--the first couple of minutes of our set. "Song" is in quotes because it comes out differently every time due to improvisation. Glad you enjoyed it! Watch the clip if you haven't! It's posted above. We love our cymbals! Kajira instilled a love of cymbal work in us and we've gone ape shit with it. Thanks, K!
I missed the other ones posted and am on my way to watch them now!
I personally do not use 9/8 in ATS unless it's a slow number. Years ago when I was in BSBD, we did it once or twice with a fast number and I didn't feel like it worked out that well. My opinion. I think it could be done, though. Anything could be done. (: -

Re: Interesting Zill Performances?
Sat, May 30, 2009 - 10:19 AMVery nice Lori and EvilEye! I haven't been entertained to that level by an improv tribal performance in some time and it made me very happy to see such a thing!
So, are the zill patterns matched to the dance combo itself or is that decided by the current leader on the fly? -

Sun, May 31, 2009 - 10:24 AMThanks! Contributing to happiness is one of our life goals. (:
The patterns are matched to the movements, and the movements are decided on the fly. We're using about 10 different patterns at the moment. We like the variety and the challenge. -
