Hey I was just gifted with an iPhone! I was wondering if there were any apps of particular interest to belly dancers... Any "name that ME rhythm" games, "ID the cue" quizzes, or video podcasts? Inquiring (and acquiring) minds want to know!

Re: Mostly off-topic: Belly dancer apps for iPhone
Fri, July 17, 2009 - 10:50 AMhome screen:
messages - this is the basic iphone app for txt msgs. you can find data-plan based app to cover you texting.
camera - basic iphone app for the camera.
camera zoom - $1, this app provides an software-based zoom, since there is no hardware zoom. unfortunately, the latest updated to this app causes it to crash all the time. so, hopefully they'll release a fix soon... there are many camera & photo editing apps out there.
photos - this is the basic iphone photo app. i made a folder of my fav images that i wanted to have on my iphone, with subfolders, then inside itunes (with the iphone synced), you can point itunes to the folder that you want it to sync with, and its subfolders. so i have pics of friends & family, and wallpapers, and photos for my contacts on the sim card. this app also has a folder called 'camera roll' where it stores images from the camera or copied from websites.
clock - this app i use for the alarm clock, which you can set to only go off on certain weekdays, and set specific sounds to each alarm. it also has a world clock if you wanna watch other cities, a stopwatch, and a timer for cooking. there are other alarm clock apps out there, to replace a home alarm clock or bedside clock.
safari - this is the basic iphone web browser. you can sync favorites to it (i havent). stretch or shrink the pages. click the bottom right hand corner to switch btwn open pgs. tap & hold on a pic or article to copy it to the camera roll or clipboard for pasting. i havent quite gotten down the copy & paste technique. note: when typing, tap& hold over your text to bring up a magnified area to move the cursor.
google - free app to easily access my gmail & gcalender, plus many other of google's features like news, docs, chat, & tasks. i mostly just use it to access my calendar, since i leave my gmail open in safari all the time.
settings - this is the basic ipone settings app. it has a LOT in there. airplane mode (no cellular signal), wifi on/off, 'notifications' is the push notifications. push is when a closed program can still notify you of things like incoming emails or IMs. sounds: ringtones & system sounds. brightness (can help battery life), and wallpaper. general: minutes usage, network connections, 3g on/off, bluetooth on/off, 'location services' (aka gps) on/off, key/touchscreen lock settings, user/parenting restrictions. mail/contacts/cal: this is where you set your email settings (i dont use it), how your phone contacts display, and how your outlook can sync with the calendar app. phone: basic phone settings. safari: browser settings like auto-fill on/off, java, plugins, pop-up blocker, & cookie settings. mesages: txt app settings. ipod: core ipod settings. photos: slideshow settings. store: enter your itunes/app store login info here. after that appear all the misc settings for 3rd party apps that you install. so, even if there are settings withing the app itself, there may be additional settings here. check it with every new app you install.
pandorabox - free app to let you see which apps are on sale, what new apps were added to the app store today, you can add app that you want to watch to a favorites list.
app sniper - $1, this app is better than pandorabox, and worked great for a few weeks then randomly started crashing on me. go figure.
i also have 4 games on my home screen, but you might not like them: blackbeard's revenge ($?), stoneloops of jurassica ($1), mahjong (free version), and wild west pinball (free).
music & internet screen:
itunes - this is the basic iphone app for the itunes store. you can download songs & moves & music videos via data or wifi. note: you will need wifi for anything over 10mb.
shazam - free, with this app you can put you iphone next to any speaker playing music, and it will try to recognise the song. it does NOT work for singing/humming a song yourself. that's a different paid app.
rhapsolyric - free, this app will detect the song that's currently playing on the ipod, and give you lyrics for it.
pandora radio - free, this is a basic internet radio app, for when you get sick of you mp3s. it has all the generic radio genres. note: you can only skip 6 songs per hour.
you tube - this is the basic iphone app for youtube. i put my login info in there, and it gets my subscribed youtube feeds for me. you can also search, or favorite a video for later reference.
joost - free, this app has random tv, music video, interview, anime... i havent used it much, but it could be fun if you're bored. note: must have wifi to use this app.
flixster - free, as you can guess, this is for movies. i have it synced with my flixster acct on facebook. you can search by title, theatre, new releases, dvd releases, etc.
iTV - this shows my cable tv listings, plus movie info like flixster, plus let me access my netflix queue.
app store - this is the basic iphone app for the app store. go here to buy your apps, and again must have wifi for things over 10mb. also check here for free updates to apps you already have.
dallas news lite - free, this will link you to local tv news websites, newspapers, and local magazine/blogs.
mail - this is the basic iphone app for email. i dont use it, since all my email is web-based it's easier for me to use safari. trying to sync it is too much work. sync doesnt really work with web-based email, only outlook. you might like it for you isp-based emails though. i think it has push notifications, too.
instapaper - free, this app has a partner desktop plugin that syncs with it. i havent used it yet, but it's so neat i'm sure i will now that my lappy has internet. with this app, when you're on you desktop & reading webpages, if you wanna finish reading it later while not at home, you can use instapaper to put it onto your iphone for later viewing. the "pro" $5 version will even save your place where you left off.
directv - free, i use this to remotely acces my dvr & set it to record. or check tv listings.
att mywireless - free, you can login to you att account to check your minutes, data usage, txts, etc. also to add or remove features to your cell plan.
stocks - this is the basic iphone app for stocks. i've never used it, but cant delete it. -shrug-

Re: Mostly off-topic: Belly dancer apps for iPhone
Fri, July 17, 2009 - 10:51 AMoh! i forgot to tell you what's on my 'home row' at the bottom:
phone - this is the basic iphone app for the dialing keypad, also can access voicemail, contacts and recent/missed calls from here.
ipod - this is the basic iphone app for ipod. you can listen by playlist, artist, album, genre, song, etc. also, within each of those groups, at the top of the group will be to shuffle within that setting. when a song is playing, you can tough near the top to turn shuffle on/off, or loop album/song/etc. play around in this app to figure out all the shortcuts & such.
facebook - free, this give the basic features of facebook. read your news feed, comment, edit your status, post a picture, check mail, etc. the only thing you cant do is acces the app that are within face book like 'local ono grinds', 'notes', or 'superpoke'.
beejive - $10, this is my IM app. I tried several free app (Fring, Nimbizz, IM+ Lite), but they all lacked something. i waited 3 wks for them to update, but they never did, so i broke down & got the top rated IM app out there. this app has landscape typing, push notifications, keeps you logged in a full day (or less if you want), global status, invisible mode. you can link buddies from multiple platforms to 1 contact (as long as there in your phone contacts), set a wallpaper behind the text, set fonts.... it really does it all. (IM+, for $5-$10, was a close runner up, but i didnt need it's skype or twitter functionality, and it wont let me group contacts.)
office & utility apps
calculator - this is the basic iphone app for a calculator. if you turn it landscape mode, it's a scientific calculator. there are other 3rd party apps with more fancy stuff, but this works fine for me.
contacts - this is the basic iphone app for your phone contacts. it will voice dial, you can enter many numbers under one name, add a picture for that person, set individual ringtones... once i set it up, i dont really open it thru this app. i usually voice dial, or use the 'phone' app.
backgrounds - free, i had this back on my itouch. it's free bc of ads that run on the side. it's just an online library of free wallpapers for your iphone. i change it out every so often, for holidays & such.
units - free, this was the top rated conversion app. distance, weight, volume, temp, time, etc....
documents - free, i havent used this yet, but i remember it getting good reviews as a document reader. maybe does excel too?
voice memos - this is a basic iphone app. the title says it all. record voice memos. i've never used it. does it maybe convert voice to type?
notes - another basic iphone app, just like notepad.
wikipanion - free, this app was the best rated app for using the wiki.
a free level - free, this app is a level, bubble & all. woo.
myLite - free, it turns your phone into a flashlight. pick any color, strobe effect, etc.
what the font - free, i got this app for Ron. you take a picture of text, and it tells you what the font is.
guitar tuner - free, another one for ron, it plays the main pitches for a guitar, so you can tune to it.
pack free - free, this is a lite version of a paid app. it help make packing lists & remebering common things.
calendar - a basic iphone app. i never use it, since it wont sync with my google calendar. it should sync with outlook though.
more to come...

Re: Mostly off-topic: Belly dancer apps for iPhone
Fri, July 17, 2009 - 2:45 PMTravel Apps
Maps - basic iphone app for google maps. it can find you via GPS, give you directions, tell you turn-by-turn directions where you just click next btwn each turn. Ron & i got lost the other day, so i used it to get us to flute circle & watched our dot travel down the road. Fun is you have a passenger to read the directions to you.
Mapquest - free, same as Maps, but by mapquest. I haven't tried it yet, but it got good ratings & might have extra features?
UrbanSpoon - free, this app uses your GPS to find restaurants. or you can pick nearby towns/suburbs. you pick the location, style of food, and price range... then spin the wheel for a recommendation. users post reviews, pictures, and sometimes menus. or you an unlock the parameters to randomize your food style/price... or location.
Yelp - free, this app will find businesses near youm using gps. it is not limited to restaurants, and can do many other places like gas, dance studios, whatever. kinda like the phonebook + gps. it also has user-generated content, where users rate businesses.
Take Me to my Car - free, this is the app for finding your car in a big parking lot. when you get out of your car, use the app to mark the spot, then later reopen it to map back to that place. gps accuracy is about 30 feet. the only downside is parking garages. also, there are paid apps with extras like taking a pic of your parking space & the cars next to you, and a notes section for garage level, etc.
Trapster - free, this uses you gps, and driving directions, to alert you or red light cameras & cop hiding places. the content is user-generated.
Cheap Gas! - free, uses your gps to find all the gas stations near you & compare the prices for each type of gas.
Gas Bag - free, same as above, i just weeded it down to these 2 apps & havent decided which is better.
Yellow Pages - free, self-explanatory.
Super Pages - free, same as above, but by a different company.
TheWeather Channel - free, uses gps to give you local weather, or maybe you can use zip code? also give hourly, 10-day, and 36-hour forecasts. has a section for live video of your area, too.
Weather - basic iphone app for weather. uses gps or zipcode, and only shows current or 5-day.
Compass - basic iphone app for the compass. it'll point you north. use it in conjunction with maps to get you pointed in the right direction to follow the map.

Stars - free, a sky map of constellations, uses GPS?.
Drinks Free - free, alcoholic drink recipes. also takes your ingredients & finds drinks that can be made.
Shopping Apps
SnapTell - free, take a pic of a book, cd, dvd, or video game and it will try to identify it for you. i think it can give pricing, shop, and reviews info too?
Pic2Shop - free, barcode scanner. it has a camera interface with a little red line as the "scanner", to line up a barcode. it then compares the barcode picture to an online database, to give you name, author, pricing, reviews, etc.
Barcode - free, this scans the other kinds of barcodes...Data Matrix & QR Codes. those square-shaped barcodes.
CardStar - free, i havent setup & used this app, but it has a good premise. unfortunately it seems to have a 50% rate of success. the premise is that you enter in the info for all you membership cards, like petsmart, petco, grocery rewards, blockbuster, etc. you enter your acct info & take a pic of the barcode. then you dont need to carry those cards in your wallet. next, at a store checkout line, have the person scan your iphone (with the proper card opened) to apply the membership perk. reviews say it works better with handheld scanners instead of table scanners. screen protectors might make it worse.
Save Benjis - $1, use this app to search for a product by keyword, maker, barcode number, part number, etc. it searches & compares prices with up to 20 or so sites like walmart.com, target, best buy, ebay, amazon, circuit city, buy.com, etc, etc, etc.

CraigSearch Free - free, craigslist app, much like the website.
CraigsPro - free, same as above. narrowed it down to these 2, but havent decided btwn the 2.
Fitness/Health & Reading Apps
iFitness - free?, workout app that gives you exercises to do by muscle group, has a workout log, and you can make & save workout routines.
iPump Total Body - $1, instructions on exercises, video of proper posture & execution, tips. logs.

Sat, July 11, 2009 - 7:18 AMI like the ap for the electronic game "Simon Says" called "Echo" with the four colored lights. You have to punch in the pattern quickly following the demo you are shown. Great for stretching the brain muscles to improve memory, and improve the process on remembering choreography :) (Oh, and it's free!)

Re: Mostly off-topic: Belly dancer apps for iPhone
Wed, September 30, 2009 - 1:42 PMI like the AMAZING SLOW DOWNER. it will speed up or slowdown any song without changing pitch.
You can also use it to loop one section of music-- super handy when drilling one section of choreography.
i think its 14.99 but so worth it.
