Videography for the arts...

topic posted Mon, April 21, 2008 - 8:38 AM by  Red Rob
I recently read comments about some bad experiences dancers have had with videographers. FWIW, I began my videography career 7+ years ago when a beautiful dancer named Kassia asked me to record her Hafla, after being burned by her other videographer who butchered the show by not tracking (following/anticipating) dancers and zooming too close, missing entrances and taking forever to turn the thing around.

In our defense.... some videographers *can* get it right... maybe it's because I've drummed with/for dancers that I "get it"? Who knows?! Or maybe it's because I love music, love the dance, and love the people who I've met along the way!

Anyhow (this is a bit of a cross-post from the other thread), I'd love to make a DVD production of the dancers/troupes at Tribal Fest, for you! I can do single-camera or multi-camera shoots and will throw in "bonus material" from the festival too.

Interested?

Post questions here -- or e-mail me on Tribe privately and we can work out details.

Cheers!
:-) Rob

- 7+ years experience shooting dancers (ouch!)
- good tracking (following/anticipation) of dancers
- preference towards wide shots (choreography), smooth fades to medium shots to highlight technique and expression
- 1-3 cameras, tastefully edited together, flexible pricing
- CD-audio mixed with house sound
- Sample of my work: Search YouTube for "NOMI 2007"

Since the details would be pretty much the same for everyone asking, can you post a little more detail on what you are offering right here?
    Thanks, Rob!

      Yeah, like price! (:

Ah... details, details.. funny thing on price is that we're all artists, which means we all know how very much time and effort our creations take, but we also appreciate the whole budget-conciousness thing... a catch 22 sometimes, yes?

OK -- here's what I'm suggesting -- if you guys come back and say "Rob, you're insane", first I'd thank you for noticing :-) and then I'd be open to hearing suggestions. FWIW, I think this is reasonable..

        - My understanding is that performances are between 7 and 15 minutes
        - I'll include some snippets from around the festival, trying to capture some of the festival ambiance, and include it on the DVD (can you say "after show party?!")
        - If any artists *want* to be featured on the DVD to promote themselves (e.g. if a band wants to include a song [or ad] to promote themselves or one of their CDs), I'd be happy to include custom footage from the event or their own material (we'd have to discuss the details)

        - Videography -- My goal is to have "something for everyone".
        Prices range from:
$20 for raw single-camera footage / $30 for the DVD, $15 for extra copies
        up to
$150 for a Fully-Edited DVD ($15 for extra copies) with:
        - multiple angles, edited into a single production
        - chapter marks (if multiple dances),
        - a "Reference View" (video wall to watch all angles simultaneously)
        - alternate angles (you can control which angle you're watching)
        - 1-Minute Highlights (YouTube-style with royalty-free music if desired)

Because of the wide range, I've uploaded an Excel worksheet with ALL the options/details to the following URL (I used "8-minute" and "14-minute" to refer to a "short" and "long" performance... 8 is more like 8-ish "< 10" and 14 is more like 14-ish "10-18" :-)

        www.candlelight-productions.com/de...xls

Just open it up and check out the options... if anything is confusing, please post here and I'll try to clarify. (or if you don't have Excel I can post a PDF version as well).

        Have a peachy day/night!
        :-) Rob

I got this PM and after asking, I'm posting it here

Unfortunately, I wont be able to make the festival this year. Silly stuff prevents me from doing so but I just wanted to let you know that Rob, the man who is willing to shoot the festival show, is awesome! He did the videography for NoMi 07 in Buffalo, NY and he's a fantastic person! I know him personally and can honestly say he's a great guy! The video is put together so well and he interacts with people with genuine enthusiasm and fun :) I've seen him drum and his wife is a bellydancer so he's not some random guy who has no clue about the art of bellydancing.

            K..that's all!

    Hi again!

Since posting two days ago I've had a few people reply privately looking to have me tape their troupes... I'll hold out until May 1st to see if there's enough pre-order interest to make this happen (I hope there is.. seems like a win for everyone who's interested!).

SO... if you think you might be interested, *please* e-mail me on Tribe or privately (my address is in the Excel packages/order-form [link in the post above]) within the next few days...

Thanks and smiling shimmies to you all!

I think you should do a TOTAL FESTIVAL DVD, would be phenomenal! It would be a huge seller ;) You could have waivers for those who do not want to be on the DVD :D

I'd buy one. . hell I'd buy several!

:-) Sounds good to me... what.. a 5-disc series with over 15 hours of video? LOL now *that's* a project...

hmm.. or maybe a smaller version... I think there are one or two details to work out too ;-)

anyhow, pass on the good ideas to Chuck et-al and maybe it'll happen next year :-)

          Cheers,

    OOPS

Someone e-mailed me yesterday that she didn't have Excel on her computer (yeah! MS doesn't own the entire planet yet!)...

So here's a PDF version of the spreadsheet with video options and pricing...
    candlelight-productions.com/demo...g.pdf

Just a two days left and then I've got to decide if I'm flyin' out... still need at least 10 more dancers to say "Heck YES Rob .. we would love you to create a video of our dancing for us!" Chuck tells me this is a large festival... guess we'll see...

(sheez... I hope I don't sound like a used car salesman here! :-)

    Cheers,
    :-) Rob

I wont be at TF :( but I'm wondering.....there are sooooo many dancers and performers that will be there that aren't on tribe who don't know about this video that they can possibly get Chuck, is there an email list that you have that you can send this out to to get more interest and response? Just a thought :)

I would be interested in getting one of these videos since I can't go to Tribal Fest this year. Chuck, let us know if they will be available to everyone who couldn't go as well as attendees.
              thanks

the videos will be of individual troupes/soloists. i don't think the whole thing will be available on dvd. that would cost, like, a million dollars. each performer or troupe gets their own show.

                  Wed, April 30, 2008 - 9:41 AM
Lori's right. Each performer or troupe is getting their own show.

This year, at least, there won't be any "compilation video" of the event. There have been talks of making a documentary video with highlights of the event... snippets of the dancers (short enough to hopefully avoid music copyright issues, or with substituted music if necessary), the vendors, the activities, backstage madness (and the "unofficial" party), interviews on "the making of Tribal Fest", the ambiance and energy/spirit, etc.... but not this year at least.

                  Sorry!
                  :-) Rob

PS It would probably be a little less than a million dollars to make! LOL
